Gustavo Gonzalez on being the Change
For Gustavo Gonzalez, real estate starts with family. Before becoming a REALTOR® he could be found travelling across the world—to Asia or South America—closing deals and selling GPS chipsets as a Sales Manager for a startup in Silicon Valley.
“Once I had my first child, my wife said I was a delinquent father--traveling too much. And she was one-hundred-percent correct!” With the need to find autonomy in his work schedule and the commitment to be a present father and better husband, he made the pivot to become a REALTOR®.
But changing careers was not all smooth sailing. Gonzalez had to break down barriers and prove naysayers wrong. “When I first started in the business, I decided to focus on my own backyard that was largely controlled by a handful of brokers. Many REALTORS® told me I was crazy to try to break into this area. I rolled up my sleeves, went to work and today, I’m a well-known and a respected broker in the area.”
There are people that feel limited by someone else’s expectations, but for Gonzalez, a growth-mindset has allowed him to reach success and he paves his vision forward to the future generation of Latinx REALTORS®. “Do not let anyone tell you that you cannot achieve something in life that you want. The only person stopping you is yourself. Believe in yourself!” he emphasizes.
“Do not let anyone tell you that you cannot achieve something in life that you want. The only person stopping you is yourself. Believe in yourself!”
Today, Gonzalez has earned the respect of his peers and holds 19 years of real estate experience under his belt. “As a REALTOR®, I get to help my clients find their dream house and help them start building wealth through equity in their properties.” He is the proud broker/owner of Valley View Properties in San Jose, California, where he has established a reputation as a trusted real estate advisor to his clients.
For Gonzalez, being a REALTOR® is much more than having autonomy over your schedule and experiencing business success—it’s about using your voice and platform to create community impact. “I believe if you want to see a change you have to be that change. That requires involvement, commitment, and leadership—and sometimes, this means that you need to be OK with being the only Latino in the room, advocating for a position or a perspective that might not be shared or understood by others.” And he uses his voice, indeed.
Proudly, Gonzalez has served as the 2019 President of the Santa Clara County Association of REALTORS® and on numerous committees, including the Professional Standards and Finance committees. Currently, he serves on the Board of Directors for the National Hispanic Organization of Real Estate Associates (NHORA) and is a Director at the California Association of REALTORS®.
Being “at the table” has enriched his experience as a REALTOR®. He understands the importance of communities such as C.A.R.’s Latinx Professionals Network that work to amplify the voices of Latinx REALTORS® in California. He invites everyone to get involved, break down barriers and use your voice.
The California Association of REALTORS® proudly celebrates Gustavo Gonzalez as a Latinx industry leader.
