Andy Bencosme Keeps the American Dream Alive through Homeownership
Andy Bencosme is a first-generation Dominican-American and celebrates his commitment to keeping his ancestor’s biggest dreams alive.
His story begins with his grandmother, who immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic in the 1950s and worked tirelessly to financially sponsor each of her five children--one at a time. Her perseverance and his family’s pursuit of the American Dream continues to inspire Bencosme to this day.
Even though most of his family didn’t achieve homeownership while he was growing up, his grandmother did, breaking down barriers, establishing roots and purchasing a home in Queens, New York. “Homeownership is vital, because it provides stability and investment to families” and he knows this firsthand. The house his grandmother purchased has been a cornerstone for the family for four generations and is a place his family still calls home today.
However, he understands that for other first-generation Americans, the dream of homeownership may seem unattainable and a daunting process. As a bilingual REALTOR® and Broker/Manager at Century 21 Village Realty, he empowers his community to achieve the American Dream of homeownership through education and perseverance.
“Real estate has given me the ability to make a difference in my community and that is extremely fulfilling. It also instills a basic foundation that homeownership is a natural milestone and possible for everyone.” Andy prides himself in ensuring his potential clients have access to trusted practitioners who can provide resources and financial education in Spanish and other preferred dominant languages.
As a prominent Latinx industry leader, Bencosme feels the responsibility to leverage his role as a REALTOR® to advocate for “better legislation and regulations that expand homeownership availability, opportunity and accessibility for all.” Through organized real estate, he advances his mission by getting involved in leadership roles at the California Association of REALTORS®.
Notably, Bencosme has served twice as the President at Arcadia Association of REALTORS® in 2009 and 2013. He has chaired and served on various committees and attributes his involvement in leadership to his mentors who encouraged him to get engaged. “They set an example of leadership and involvement that made me want to follow in their footsteps.” Now, he wants to pave it forwards to others.
“No matter what your family and personal background is, you can succeed. Whatever you don’t know, you can learn. Take the first step, get involved and write your own legacy.”
He inspires the next generation of agents to get involved through communities like C.A.R.’s Latinx Professionals Network, whose mission is to amplify the voices of Latinx REALTORS® in California. With encouragement, Bencosme reminds us that “nothing is out of your reach. No matter what your family and personal background is, you can succeed. Whatever you don’t know, you can learn. Take the first step, get involved and write your own legacy.”
The California Association of REALTORS® proudly celebrates Andy Bencosme as a Latinx industry leader.
